ABOUT STONY STRATFORD

Stony Stratford is a small market town in North Buckinghamshire, England. It lies upon the old Roman Watling Street which was originally the country's major road going north from London to the north - west. Its position has therefore given it a long and fascinating history going back to those Roman times. As an important stop-over during the days of stagecoach travel its two main hostelries of the Cock and Bull hotels are reputed to have originated the popular phrase "A cock & bull story" from the exaggerated tales that travellers exchanged under their roofs. It is mentioned in Shakespeare's "Richard 111" as the place where the young, uncrowned Edward V was apprehended at the old Rose & Crown Inn.

Surrounding the town is the River Great Ouse which has greatly influenced its development over the years. It enhances the local wildlife and provides many scenic views. The riverside pathways and meadows are much appreciated by the local populace and are the setting for many of the images appearing on this blog.
